BART at 50 Years

6:00 PM – 7:30 PM

Description

BART is celebrating 50 years of service, an auspicious milestone for an organization that provides so much more than transportation to our region. Join BART General Manager Robert Powers and former BART Director of Public Affairs Michael C. Healy (author of “BART: The Dramatic History of the Bay Area Rapid Transit System) as they share a series of tales from the tracks. Together, Powers and Healy will look back at BART’s illustrious past, take stock of today’s unprecedented challenges, and soar into the future to discuss what lies ahead for the Bay Area’s mass transit system.

Bob Powers became BART’s tenth General Manager in July 2019. He manages an operating budget of $1 billion, oversees $1.4 billion in capital projects, and leads an agency with 4,000 employees that keeps the San Francisco Bay Area moving. Powers helps to carry out BART’s mission to provide safe, reliable, clean, quality transit service while putting the riders first and prioritizing the safety of all.

Mike Healy was responsible for BART’s media affairs and marketing activities from 1971—about ten months before trains started running—until his retirement in 2004. He is the author of “BART: The Dramatic History of the Bay Area Rapid Transit System.”
