Our March 2023 Book Club Pick: David Tung Can't Get a Girlfriend Until He Gets Into an Ivy League College by Ed Lin
David Tung Can't Get a Girlfriend Until He Gets Into an Ivy League College is the first official young adult novel from Ed Lin, author of the acclaimed novels Waylaid and This is a Bust. Humorous, sharp, and socially complex, David Tung Can't Get a Girlfriend tells the story of an Asian American New Jersey high school student who must navigate multiple social circles, bullying, as well as parental pressures to get A's and conform to cultural norms and expectations. Amid these pressures is the fear he will die alone, whether he gets into Harvard or not.
Ed Lin, a native New Yorker of Taiwanese and Chinese descent, is the first author to win three Asian American Literary Awards and is an all-around standup kinda guy. His books include David Tung Can't Get a Girlfriend Until He Gets Into an Ivy League College (Kaya Press, 2020), Waylaid (Kaya Press, 2002), and a trilogy set in New York's Chinatown in the 70s: This is a Bust (Kaya Press, 2007), Snakes Can't Run and One Red Bastard. Ghost Month, published by Soho Crime in July 2014, is a Taipei-based mystery, and Incensed, published October 2016, continues that series. Lin lives in Brooklyn with his wife, actress Cindy Cheung, and son.
