A short work-in-progress documentary film sample: Sign My Name To Freedom

12:00 PM – 2:00 PM
West Oakland Branch

Description

Join us for a special work sample screening of Sign My Name to Freedom, a documentary that celebrates the life of Betty Reid Soskin, a trailblazing African American activist, advocate, musician, and National Park Ranger. This inspiring film delves into her experiences with racial and gender discrimination, her family's struggle against housing segregation, and her lifelong commitment to equity and justice.

Following the screening, there will be a Q&A session featuring Henry Raulston, a former Army photographer. In 1967, Raulston and other local photographers founded the Association of Black Photographers. He documented community gatherings and demonstrations in Oakland, and some of his work is currently on exhibit at the West Oakland Library.

This event is perfect for adults and families, providing an educational and inspiring opportunity to engage with history and the community as we approach and celebrate Black History Month.

This free screening also supports the filmmaker's efforts to complete the documentary and preserve Soskin's story for future generations.
