Events › Bernadette Atuahene: Plundered - A Conversation with the Author

Bernadette Atuahene is a property law scholar and professor at the USC Gould School of Law. Her book Plundered: How Racist Policies Undermine Homeownership in America uses the stories of two grandfathers -one white, one Black - who arrived in Detroit at the turn of the twentieth century to reveal how racist policies weaken Black families, widen the racial wealth gap, and derive profit from pain. Professor Atuahene's work focuses on land stolen from people in the African Diaspora. She received a National Science Foundation award for her current project about racialized property tax administration in Detroit, work which culminated in the publication of Plundered. 

Professor Atuahene will be joined by Librarian Ian Hetzner for a discussion of Plundered, its parallels to Oakland's history of displacement and gentrification, and, ultimately, prescriptions and reparations for these injustices.
