Description

Margaret Juhae Lee is the author of Starry Field: A Memoir of Lost History. In it, through a combination of investigative journalism, oral history, and archival research Lee uncovers the lost history of her grandfather, Lee Chul Ha, who was a student revolutionary imprisoned in 1929 for protesting Japanese imperialism. More than just a family history, Lee's book asks whether we can ever separate ourselves from our family’s past—and if the answer is yes, should we?

Lee was previously a literary editor at The Nation and her work has appeared in Elle, The Advocate, The Progressive, Oakland Magazine, and more.

May is AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) Heritage Month and Lee will focus her talk this evening on her interviews with her grandmother, which form the heart of the book. Lee will also be speaking about how people can approach their own elders to elicit stories about the past. This combination of book talk and oral history workshop is sure to be a fascinating night at the library. Register now!
