The Lawrence Hall of Science presents Mesoamerican Makers (Crafts)-Painting with Nature

Painting With Nature Learn how people in Mesoamerica used nature to make bright colors for art. Discover how the cochineal bug and local plants were used to create paint, dye cloth, and share stories through murals and codices. Then explore natural pigments and create your own artwork inspired by these traditions.

Join us for the following programs in the series:

July 3rd - Mayan Calendar and Me Join us in an exploration of the Mayan Haab calendar. Learn about its months and compare it to our calendar today, including the seasons and the holidays or traditions that mark special times in our life. Then create and decorate your own calendar to take home.

 August 7th - Sun and Stone - Mayan Pyramids and the Solstice Explore how the Maya studied the sun and stars to track time. Learn how places like Chichen Itza were built to mark the solstices - the longest and shortest days of the year. Then design and build your own model that uses light and shadow to show a special day in the sky.
