The Town's TBR: Food Sovereignty

If you're wondering why food isn't free and this is for you. If you're curious why there's more corner stores than grocery stores in some neighborhoods, this is for you. If you're wondering how politicians and millionaires got to decide what is and isn't safe to eat, what plants can and can't grow on the land, this is most definitely for you. To some the idea that healthy, nutrious food should be free and that everyone should have access to it seems radical. To others, it's common sense. Food sovereignty as a concept acknowledges the way in which food has been politicized and made into a business rather than about the health and well being of the land and the people who tend to and live on it. There are several grassroots organizations in Oakland trying to fix where the system has failed us by putting food in the hands of people who need it most. Town Fridges, urban farms who accept EBT, and food distributions centers can all be considered acts of food sovereignty. This booklist was curated in partnership with Acta Non Verba, an Oakland-based community garden and partner in Oakland Public Library's free community gardening programs.
